Mike and I just returned from a quick trip to Minneapolis to check in on final preparations for the "Through A Glass, Darkly" concert (March 29 & 30!). We had production meetings and met the sound recorder and the video team — and best of all, we sat in on last Tuesday's rehearsal where we heard the entire piece performed live.
The concert-goers have no idea what a treat they are in for. With two weeks still to go, the boys in the Chorus already sound absolutely amazing. And for everyone who can't make the concert, be glad that Public TV is taping it. There will be a DVD available sometime in June, and it will be broadcast statewide in Minnesota!
Here are some photos from the trip:

We just received confirmation that Twin Cities Public Television will be broadcasting the World Premiere concert performance of Mike's new oratorio Through A Glass, Darkly, a work commissioned by the Twin Cities Gay Men's Chorus that looks at the rippling effects crystal meth addiction has on the community.
I also promised we would post a couple of teaser tracks from our demo. We can't give the whole thing away (there's a DVD in the works, too), but here is track 1, "Opener". Expect a couple more in the upcoming days.
The concert performances are in Minneapolis on March 29 and 30 in Minneapolis (more info, tickets) and as an encore, the Chorus is performing Darkly for their slot in the GALA Choruses Festival in Miami this July.

We sadly had to say goodbye to one of our labs this week. Charlie died Thursday night after a sudden onset of restlessness and frequent small seizures, likely caused by a brain tumor. She was 10 years 9 months.
As we sifted through the hundreds of pictures we have of her, we found a few short video clips taken on our digital camera. We'll be sharing a few of them here on the blog as a tribute to her healthier days. Mike and I — and Roscoe and Frankie — miss her very much.
Here's a quick overview of some things coming up for us in 2008.
Other plates are spinning. We'll post updates here as they come.
Save the date! Mike's newest work gets its World Premiere on March 29 and 30, 2008, Minneapolis.
Last May, Mike began a major choral work commissioned by the Twin Cities Gay Men's Chorus, a long-form piece that looks at the effects of crystal meth addiction on the GLBT community, their family, and friends.
Through A Glass, Darkly is a 45-minute oratorio for 3 soloists and choir and will premiere as the second half of the TCGMC's Spring 2008 concert "Friends Are Benefits". Two performances will be held at Ted Mann Concert Hall on the U of MN campus in Minneapolis: March 29, 2008 at 8pm and March 30, 2008 at 2pm. The following July, the chorus travels to Miami to perform "Darkly" for 160+ choruses at the GALA Choruses Festival 2008.
This is a really exciting and massive work, with both music and lyrics by Mike, telling the story of a boy hitting rock bottom and the effects his addiction has on those around him. It will form the cornerstone of an unprecedented outreach partnership created by the chorus to educate youth about the dangers of the growing crystal meth epidemic.
The music is thrilling, unlike anything I've ever heard in the choral world and traversing a whole slew of moody genres from classical to rock to swing to club beat. We cannot wait to hear 150 voices singing this. Mike just presented the finished work to the choir and their patrons this weekend. Clips of the demo tracks will be posted here soon.
Tickets are already on sale. Details can be found at the TCGMC website. Let us know if you're traveling there next March. We can help recommend places to stay and how to get around Minneapolis. Hope to see you there!
