Overheard in the Theatre

Overheard at The Farnsworth Invention, 11/06/07
A lady in Orchestra Center, Row M:

When I go to a musical, I count the number of songs so that I know how many I have to listen to.

Good thing for her she was at a play.

NYMF Platforms reviews are in!

Brent's show Platforms just closed it's sold-out run at NYMF. Here are a few quotes from the reviews we've collected so far:

From BroadwayWorld.com's message board, posted by whatever2 - Oct 2, 2007

saw "platforms" tonite — run, do not walk, to get tickets. it's this year's commissioned choreography piece, and simply stunning. a little like "contact" (even stars deborah yates!), but w/ a clever, modern, urban new york sensibility. simply brilliant.

From Backstage.com, reviewed by Ron Cohen - Oct 3, 2007

Lord's recorded score beautifully evokes the show's shifting moods…

Platforms is an hour or so of the most intense and exciting dance you're likely to see on any New York stage this season.

From nytheatre.com, reviewed by Josh Sherman - Oct 4, 2007

The original music, by Brent Lord, is perhaps the most inspired soundtrack of a theatre piece I've heard in quite some time. The choreography matches perfectly with each mood shift—the underscoring in each and every scene is precisely in tune with the dancers' vocabulary of movement.

If you missed Platforms at NYMF this year, BroadwayWorld.com has a NYMF dance preview video that you can watch here. Their "tap-off" number is the first one after Kris's interview.

Dogs That Wear Hats

"Dogs That Wear Hats" was originally the opener for a songbook concert I did with our alumni group at NYU. Stephen Tomac and I are now taking a few songs from that night and building a completely new show around it. Four people, concert style, maybe some plot — we're not sure yet. But we know how it will open, and pretty sure we know how it will close. Gavin Creel dropped in a while back to record this demo of the opener for us.

More details as we're able to work on the show. Stay tuned.

Hair Of The Quam

Everyone knows a drunk dialer. Ours leaves messages.

"Four martinis and three glasses of wine" after the '02 Bill & Hillary Christmas Party, our dear friend Matt Quam left three long messages in a row on our answering machine. Of course we kept them.

A few days later, there was music and a lyric, and to top it all off, our favorite spur-of-the-moment diva Lisa Howard (currently starring in "Spelling Bee" on Broadway). When you hear her, keep in mind it was 10am(!) when she hit those notes. We tracked everything and debuted a finished mix for Matt and friends that night, New Years Eve '02 (into '03), immortalizing his drunk dialing forever.
